2011 Our First Season: ROMEO & JULIET

This Shakespearean tragedy was presented at three different venues: St. Charles Borromeo Church in Brooklyn Heights, The Granite Prospect in Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the Doctorow Center for the Performing Arts in Hunter, NY. This "Romeo & Juliet" with a Muslim/Hindu theme was inspired, sadly, by recent news events of 21st Century forbidden Hindu/Muslim love that ended in an "honour killing" and suicide. It was presented in a fast paced 90 minute version with eight actors and four puppets. The concept: A troupe of eight skilled street performers tells this timeless tale of adolescent love through the prism of 21st Century attitudes and prejudices: when a Hindu and a Muslim fall in love at first sight, sparks fly, igniting centuries-old tribal passions. Love and laughter are followed by death and despair: why must it take tragedy to bury ancient animosities?
